Democracy and journalism are inter-related with each other: NC President Deuba

Pokhara, Aug 6: Journalist Rabindranath Banstola has been honoured with 'Daya Shankar Palikhe Journalism Award-2075. The award carries a purse of Rs 55,555 and a letter of felicitation

At a programme organised by Kaski chapter of Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) at Pokhara today, Nepali Congress President, Sher Bahadur Deuba honoured Banstola with the award. The price of the award has been increased to Rs 55,555 this year from Rs 33,333.

On the occasion, NC President Deuba said that democracy and independent journalism are inter related with each other.

Saying the government is going to brought media council bill curtailing press freedom and freedom of expression, he said they would not let the bill pass at any cost.

Also the former Prime Minister, Deuba said that the NC has been strongly playing its role of opposition and claririfed that it has been moving ahead peacefully following rules and system without carrying out violent activities of vandalizing chairs and railing like communist party.

Accusing the incumbent government of bringing several bills with the intention to centralise the power, leader Deuba announced that Media Council Bill and Guthi Bill would be aborted right from the parliament if they came with the same intention.

He spent words highlighting the contribution of the Palikhe family to the country's democratic movements.

Similarly, Minimum Wages Fixation Committee chair Gangadhar Parajuli said the committee had accomplished significant tasks in the interests of working journalists.

Federation of Nepali Journalists ( FNJ) central member Ram Krishna Gyawali said the government had promised that the Media Council Bill would come with amendment and the FNJ agitation against the bill had been presently put off following the same commitment. He requested NC

President Deuba for his efforts to remove anti-press provisions incorporated in the bill.

Gandaki Sate Assembly member Krishna Thapa described journalism and democracy as interrelated disciplines, adding that he was always in favour of freedom of the press..

NC Kaski president Krishna KC alleged the government of violating the democratic norms and values, calling on it to abide by the rules.

Awarded personality Rabindra Nath Bastola expressed his hope that the honour would positively force her to be more responsible and active in his field. He announced to use the amount as a seed money to establish the annual 'Bishwa- Rewati Education Journalism Award' carrying a

purse of Rs 25,555 in commemoration of his parents. The award will be institutionalized by the FNJ, Kaski chapter.

On the occasion, Sunayana Palikhe, daughter of the Daya Shankar Palikhe, declared the family would be establishing a revolving fund of Rs 250,000 in memory of her mother the late Uttara Kumari Palikhe who had a leading role in the Pokhara's social transformation to honour a woman dedicated to the social transformation causes from this year.
