Government has policy of controlling Biplav's activities legally: Home Minister
Kathmandu, June 24: Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa has said efforts were underway for a long time to seek a solution to the activities of Netra Bikram Chand 'Biplav'-led group politically. The government had taken the group's activities seriously.
In a meeting of the House of Representative's State Affairs and Good Governance Committee today, he informed the death of one Kumar Poudel in police encounter at Lakhandehi on June 20. According to him, the government has adopted the policy of controlling the group's armed activities developed lately legally and practically.
Under the same policy, the arrest of group's cadres has been launched nationwide and on the same context, Poudel was killed in police encounter, he informed the meeting.
"The group does not seem that it wants the problem be solved politically," the Home Minister said. In his response to lawmakers' queries that whether the State mechanism was conceiving to reverse the political achievements by stimulating another conflict, he said, "The government follows the ethics of conflict and it is fully aware that criminals and protesting groups should not be killed in the name of encounter." As he claimed, the government is clear that a law should be the means of dealing with the problem.
He promised to carry out necessary investigations into the case and added that Poudel who had unleashed terror the community through a donation spree was killed in the police encounter.
Inspector General of Police Sarbendra Khanal read out complaints and cases filed against Poudel found to have been involved in various criminal activities.
Prior to this, lawmakers in the meeting demanded that the government brings out the fact behind the murder of Poudel by forming a probe committee. They vented their ire against the government by asking why it chose a confrontation after leaving the way of dialogue and talks to bring Biplav-led group to mainstream politics?.
They suggested that the government brings the group to talks. Stating criminals should be treated as per the constitution and the law, they demanded formation of a probe committee in regard with the murder of Poudel.
Meanwhile, the committee directed the Home Ministry to bring out the fact behind the murder by forming a probe committee and submit the report within seven days.
