International Karate Championship kicks off in Patna
Neera Gautam, Patna, India, April 22 (RSS): The International Open Karate Championship has started at Pataliputra Sports Complex in Patna, the capital of Bihar state in India today.
Vice Chancellor of Patna University, Prof Dr Ras Bihari Singh, inaugurated the championship organised by All India Shiteryu Karate Do Academy with support of Karate Association of India.
Two hundred and twenty-one players from several countries including Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Bhutan are competing in various departments of the championship. Nepal's national team participating in the championship is led by chief instructor of Japan Gojuryo Karate Do Mission, KB Rana.
Nepal's 26 players will vie in various events under different age groups and weight categories in the championship. Rana said Nepali players will be victorious due to their diligence and hard work.
Rupa Rana, Dil Maya Koirala, Bipin Rana, Santu Tharu, Chhiring Gurung, Dil Bahadur Budhathoki and Sandip Chaudhari are competing in the 50 kg, 55 kg, 50kg, 55kg, 65kg, 70kg and 75kg weight group, respectively, in the senior (above 19 years) age group.
Similarly, Aman Soti Magar, Suman Pariyar and Sanjaya Chaudhary are competing in the 50 kg, 60kg and 70 kg, respectively, in the under-19 (junior) group while Shivani Basnet, Bipin Gurung, Sunil Rawal and Roshan Rana are competing towards the 50kg, 55 kg and 60 kg weight group under the Under-17 (Junior) age group.
Towards the sub-junior or under-14 years age category, Isha Saru is competing in the 40kg weight group, Aakriti Rana in the 50 kg weight group, Priyanka Thapa in the 55 kg weight group, Sahil Gurung in the 35 kg weight group, Jeevan Pun in the 40 kg weight group, Milan Shreesha in the 45 kg weight group, Prasun Shahi in the 50 kg weight group, and Saroj Chhetri in the 55 kg weight group.
Likewise, Aditya Chhetri is competing in the 20 kg weight group, Bibek Thakuri is competing in the 25kg weight group, Gaurab Poudel is competing in the 30kg weight group and Amisha Pokhrel is competing in the 30kg weight group of the Under 10 years (kids) age group.
Before this, the Nepali team led by the Japan Gojuryu Karate Do Mission Association won 14 gold medals in the International Open Karate Championship organised in Poona and 17 gold medals in the South Asian Championship held in New Delhi, India in 2017.
